I have used 1and1 for web hosting for years and never had a problem. I don’t know where you came up with the “known globally for it’s horrific web hosting”. They are just fine.

I suppose if you like really slow load times, 503 errors on nearly every webmail login, constant downtime etc… then sure, they are ok. But if your any other professional who has issues with slow mail with constant errors not to mention crappy constant downtime then that’s another story.

I have used them since 2003 and never had any issues with them on hosting. No downtimes, fast servers. Maybe it’s the server you are on. See if they can move you onto a new one. One thing I can give you is the crappy webmail interface, but it looks like they are upgrading that now. I never use the webmail anyway (I go through Outlook).

All lies! ;) I have been with them since 2000 and just started having issues about a year ago. Switched over to RackSpace a few weeks ago… We will see what happens with that. So far so good.

1and1 has managed to do it again, while I thought they had ironed out the many problems here Webmail 2.0 is forced upon us.

It’s a very slow, poorly designed webmail system that renders simple email access a major pain in the A____.
1. Its slow
2. It has far too much junk simple users DON’T want such as tasks, calendar etc.
3. It uses too much of the computer window. The left column forces too many icons and 90% of them are not used. The top bar that has reply, forward etc also has too many icons not needed which cause the page to be smaller and cut off emails.
4. Often the whole program fails and you see a “Loading Scripts and content please wait”.

Listen up 1and1 Webmail is NOT welcome, very poorly designed, in fact who ever designed it should be fired I could do a better job. But then it would have been better left alone as 1.0 was fine and did the job. Please no bells and whistles, it worked fine “if it works don’t fix it”. I’m now in a huge mess with everyone who used to use 1.0 who since Nov 19th now find email access is a huge hassle.

Stop your forcing things down our throats, you did this before with telling me your email marketing was spam which it was not since people opted in.

You billed me for things without asking, you froze accounts without notice. Why do you do all these really stupid things when I was with Go Daddy I never had any of these problems.

Comment from Bob

As far as past issues and people saying 1and1 is NOT known for problem, from my experience (I’ve had about 10 accounts with them) YES they’ve had many problem and its not by any account unknown. Search google and you’ll find more 1and1 sucks sites then any other internet provider. Don’t take other posters word or mine, search google yourself for other user problems.

I did not love webmail 1.0 but it was useable. Although even the free Yahoo is better. Often when you use public internet cafes some don’t allow all the scripts so sometimes less an simple is better. My post above about 2.0 shares a bit about my frustration with 1and1 2.0.

1and1 is cheap which is the main reason I went with it. Tech support has been below bad, most of the time young Filipino women who don’t know what they’re talking about. many times I’ve told clients to NOT use them due to the problems. I’m sure there are those who don’t have problem, but when I did I had to either solve them myself or just not use the functions I had problems with.

I recall the nightmare when I moved to them and used my existing email lists where people opted into these lists. They were not spam lists but lists from people who had joined the list. When I used 1and1 email marketing program with the same names some of the addresses complained to 1and1 who then threatened me with accusations of spamming. I just changed the ISP not the info that had previously been mailed without problems. It was a joke and eventually they stopped.

Simple things like this and the long known billing issues where they re-bill without notice.

As stated, call people liars etc. don’t take what a few posters state, search google about 1and1 and you’ll find nothing but hate mail. They’re cheap and with that said, you get what you pay for. Webmail 2.0 sucks…

thank you

1and1 has again created a disasterouse webmail interface, it’s SLOW, it doesn’t load on mobile devices well, and in a browser it is cumbersome to navigate.

Why? Thanks but no thanks, perhaps 1and1 just needs a plain html interface, without bells and whistles, because they AGAIN have forgotten the purpose for logging in to check emails is to CHECK EMAILS. Not to spend time waiting on your system loading… Then only to time out. Or for us to have to call you and tell ask why the email is down.

The new 1and1.webmail.com interface was 4 steps backwards, poorly done in usability… Just give us an html option at least!

1and1 Webmail 2.0 Sucks.. AGAIN!

You can roll back to webmail 1 in the control panel. Although they wont tell you that, even if you threaten to leave.

1&1 is pretty bad for professionals in the web design industry. (I have accounts with about 10 hosting companies currently, and interact with more via customers) I have been with them since 2003 and by far they have the worst customer support, the most email downtimes and the worst communication with their customers. Their billing policies are also extremely shady. An example: they had an email for one of my accounts that had a typo in it. When the domain came up for renewal, they emailed to the incorrect email. Rather than sending a paper letter indicating the past due bill, they sent me straight to collections – for a $8.99 bill! And then they charged me an additional $18.95 late fee. Quite ridiculous.

To the Administrative Staff of Webmail,

I am writing to share concerns about the new 2.0 version of 1and1email.

Overnight, my email account has gone from being a helpful tool to being a
cumbersome nuisance. It is slow-to-load. My emails are scrambled. When I try to
delete emails, they just stay there.

I called your customer service line twice. The first time, I spoke with a
helpful representative who said that customers would be able to revert back to
the older version of webmail if they preferred it, but he wasn’t sure when this
version would be available.

The second time, after repeated difficulties in what were previously simple
tasks (viewing email, deleting unwanted emails) and frustrations with the longer
time that my email account now takes to load, I spoke with a different customer
service representative.

She was not helpful at all. She didn’t seem to really be listening to what I was
saying. She gave me different information that what I had heard from the first
representative. When I asked to speak with her supervisor, she refused.

Never before have I called a customer service line for a service that I am
paying for and received worse service. Never before has a representative
flat-out refused to let me speak with their supervisor. I have to admit… I was
a bit appalled.

My desired outcome is to be able to access my email with the older, more
efficient and proficient version.

This is the response I received from 1&1 – please note; they have been very helpful in talking with me about this issue.

Hi Sean,

At this time, there is no way for a customer to revert back to webmail 1.0, and I doubt it will ever be an option since 2.0 is quite better. Once the account has been upgraded only webmail 2.0 can be used.

We kept the logins the same for customers who might have bookmarked or memorized the webmail.1and1.com link. The login page may look the same, but once an account is upgraded only 2.0 is available.

Hope this helps.

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year!

Found a fix regarding the “Attachment” section of email composer not showing up. I hope this helps all the guys who experienced the same problem, and I hope 1&1 picks this up and includes it in their FAQ, since i spent some time on resolving this!!

I use Internet Explorer 8, and I think the problem is related to this version of IE, although I cannot confirm.

Anyway, in this version, you have a Compatibility View option icon (green, looks like a torn page), located top right of the browser window (next to the refresh button in a normal window, or next to the padlock icon in a “New Email” 1&1 window).

When you hover on this icon, a notification shows: “Compatibility View: websites designed for older browsers will often look better, and problems such as out-of-place menus, images or text will be corrected”.

Click on this, and voila, the attachment options will show (at least this worked for me!!).

I hope this helps, let me know if it worked for you guys…

re:
“At this time, there is no way for a customer to revert back to webmail 1.0, and I doubt it will ever be an option since 2.0 is quite better.”

But it isn’t better.

It’s slower.
It takes forever to load and often times out.
You can’t just click a box on the left to delete multiple items at once like you used to.
There is more spam.
There is a coding problem causing intermittent problems whereby recipients of an email from me can’t read the email (which has never happened before).

It’s not better.

And the customer service is not so great. Call them — each person will be reading from a script. Ask for a supervisor. He or she will read from a script as well. Try to reach someone in corporate. Try to find the corporate number — it takes some intense research. And when you finally reach corporate, the person you talk to will reroute you to the same IT Department that you spoke with in the first place.

Email them — and wait for a response. See if the response they give you actually addresses the problem you contacted them about in the first place. See if it looks like a canned response, or as if they have made any changes or taken any proactive steps to address the matter.

Good luck.

Guys – I also have had pretty good uptime and speeds/service as far as the web hosting and email goes. I agree support sucks. But mainly, Webmail 2.0 is horrible – and I didn’t think it could get worse from 1.0. Wow. I can only see HALF of my email if I’m lucky on the screen even on a 14″ laptop screen. If this were on a ‘netbook’ forget it. You can’t even hide the toolbars and other dialogs that are in the way and view your email message full screen even after drilling down on it. I’ve just tried http://www.mail2web.com right now which I’d used way back when for mobile email – and it works fine for an alternative email. They’ve been around a long time, are BBB acredited, and PCMag reviewed them way back when. Just use the simple login with your full email address and password and wallah. You put up with some ads – but used to that via Hotmail and others. At least I can see my emails mostly full screen now. Get this fixed 1and1 or I may be looking elsewhere after years of faithful service.

My two cents, webmail 2.0 is a big step down in that it won’t even work for me! I use Opera browser and a smaller than 1024 screen. I WANT THE OLD VERSION. I’ve been customer for many many years, it really sucks how they raise prices on the home account 40% and are basically causing! difficulties for existing users who otherwise would not need to upgrade their hardware/software just to continue their hosting activities.

From 1and1 support:
The minimum display resolution is 1024×768. A higher resolution allows
to display more information at once. This increases the ease of use.

Browser requirements:
Internet Explorer 6 or higher
Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher
SeaMonkey 1.0 or higher

Additional requirements:
Cookies must be activated
JavaScript must be activated
Popup windows must be allowed

I HATE the new and improved Webmail 2.0. Previously, I was able to read an entire e-mail without loading it. I simply looked at the contents below the horizontal bar (please forgive my layperson’s technical ignorance). Now I can barely see a line or two of the e-mails. When I click on the e-mail to open it, the response time is ridiculous.

Time to look for another provider.

I too agree with the people who say 1and1 is not as bad as people say it it. Lets put it in perspective,

I have been with them since 2005 and host 6 sites (one being ecommerce and most being database driven) only ever had downtime once and that was for about 4 hours.

They host hundreds of thousands of peoples sites, statistically its impossable to have NO ISSUES. I think they do a great job, regardless of price.

My only gripe with webmail is that it doesnt seem to render html emails too well, It also doesnt render tables very well either. Apaprt fromt hat though it helps when I dont have my Mac.

Just my 2p
